Characterization of Cms and Their Corresponding Maintainer Lines in Hybrid Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The CMS lines viz. IR 58025A, IR 68886A, IR 68888A, IR 68897A, IR 68899A, IR 69622A and IR69626A have been found to be usable female parents for hybrid rice breeding due to their appreciable phenotypic acceptability, stable pollen sterility, panicle exertion rate and good out crossing rate. Panicle exertion rate of CMS lines had moderate heritability (38.34%) coupled with low genetic advance (2.34%) expected in the subsequent generations, proved to be vulnerable to environmental fluctuation. In general, the maintainer (B) lines flowered 2-3 days earlier than the isogenic CMS lines. Yield potential of the maintainer lines was intermediate in performance and the range of yield per hectare was from 2.17 to 5.09 tons. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was not remarkably varied from each other for most of the characters studied, indicated negligible environmental influence on these traits. Overall genetic correlation coefficients were higher than corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients indicated strong relation present among the studied characters.

Objectives:

To study the performance of 14 CMS lines for different characters and to study the performance of 14 corresponding maintainer lines for yield and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

14 CMS lines at the age of 30 days were transplanted side by side following complete randomized design with three replications. Single row of twelve plants were planted using single seedling per hill with a spacing of 20 x 20 cm. Other cultural practices as recommended for irrigated rice were followed to raise the crop. Days to first flowering, days to fifty percent flowering, plant height, effective tillers per plant, panicle per plant, panicle length, panicle exertion rate and out crossing rate was recorded for first experiment. Second experiment comprises of 14 corresponding maintainer lines of the first experiment. Thirty days old seedling was transplanted using RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 2m x 2.5m with spacing of 20 x 20 cm. Days to first flowering, days to fifty percent flowering, days to 100 % flowering, plant height, effective tillers per plant, panicle length, primary branches per panicle, total spikelets per panicle, filled grains per panicle, unfilled spikelet per panicle, spikelet fertility percentage, panicle weight, 1000 grain weight, yield per plant and yield per plot was recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The information generated from this study clearly revealed that CMS lines and their corresponding maintainer lines having genetic similarity except for pollen fertility. Maintainer lines usually 3 to 5 days earlier than CMS lines. Blooming time and duration of blooming of maintainer lines are different from corresponding CMS lines. This information is very important for CMS lines seed multiplication and seed production with restorer lines
