Determination of Physico-chemical Properties of Soil of Farm Land and Homestead Soils of Purbo Tethulia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The values of organic matter (OM), pH, bulk density (BD), electrical conductivity (EC), total N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sodium (Na), sulphur (S) and zinc (Zn) for the study area varied from 0.52 to 5.308%, 4.47 to 7.10, 1.18 to 1.30, 42 to 220 ÞS/cm, 0.03 to 0.29%, 0.43 to 50.42 ppm, 0.05 to 1.35 meq/100g, 68 to 153 ppm, 17 to 117 ppm and 0.68 to 7.53 ppm, respectively (Table 4.1.1). On the other hand, the values of the corresponding parameters varied from organic matter (OM), pH, bulk density (BD), electrical conductivity (EC), total N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sodium (Na), sulphur (S) and zinc (Zn) for the farm area varied from 0.57 to 1.07%, 5.07 to 6.77, 1.18 to 1.30, 122 to 211 ÞS/cm, 0.03 to 0.06%, 0.52 to 1.34 ppm, 0.06 to 0.09 meq/100g, 109 to 225 ppm, 11 to 48 ppm and 0.17 to 1.64 ppm, respectively. Out of 15 spots of the farm area, the textural classes of 14 spots were found as silt loam. Only one spot belonged to silty clay loam. Similar trend was also observed in the case of homestead soil. The textural classes of four spots were found to be silt loam and only one as clay loam.

Objectives:

To find out physico-chemical properties of farm and homestead soils

Methodology:

The study was carried out during October to November, 2011. A total of 45 soil samples were collected from 15 spots covering the entire farm land soil area of Purba Tethulia. Three samples were collected from each spot from depths of 0-5, 5-10 and 10-15 cm. Similarly a total of 15 soil samples were collected from five spots covering the entire homestead area of the same village. All the soil samples were collected with the help of soil auger. Individually marked polythene bag was used for each of the samples. All the collected samples were prepared for analysis and sent to Agri-Varsity Humbltd Soil Testing Laboratory, Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and the Regional Laboratory, Mrittika Bhaban, SRDI, Maskanda, Mymensingh, for analyzing various parameters based on available facilities.
