Updating Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide, Pabna Sadar, Pabna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This Upazila has 17 unions having 258 mauzas and 1 municipality. Per capita land in the Upazila is only 0.09 ha. The area is divided into Old Ganges Floodplain (30,019 ha) and Active Ganges Floodplain (5186 ha). Four land types namely high land, medium high land, medium low land and low land are identified in the Upazila. High land and medium high lands occupy about 65.7% of the Upazila. Major area of the Upazila is covered by loam soils (36.4%) followed by clay laom (19.4%) soils, clay soils (12.9%) and sandy soils (8.1%). In Old Ganges Floodplain Sara (26.2%), Gopalpur (23.4%) and Ishurdi (13.1%) are major soil group followed by Ghior (3.8%). In Active Ganges Floodplain sandy alluvium and silty alluvium are major soils. Four water recession class namely very early, early, normal and late have been identified in the Upazila. Water from major areas (66.7%) recedes within Kartik so there is ample scope of timely cultivation of rabi crops. Two drainage classes namely intermittently drained (33.7%) and poorly drained (45.6%) soils are identified. 14 cropping patterns are identified in the Upazila of which Rabi crops (wheat/mustard/khesari/lentil/onion/garlic)-Jute/B.Aus/Teel/Chilli/Maize-Fallow; Rabi crops (wheat/mustard/khesari/lentil/onion/garlic)-Jute/B.Aus/Teel/Chilli/Maize-T.Aman; Boro-T.Aman; Groundnut/Futi/Tarmuj/Bangi/Khira-Fallow; Rabi vegetables- Kharif vegetables are major.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map of Pabna sadar Upazila is prepared using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising physiography, landform. land type, soil type and their proportion in different mapping units. Field survey is carried out in Rabi season preferably after harvest of T.Aman. Soils are checked by opening mini-pit along catena following a traverse line so as to cover maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected from each land type and soil groups following approved technique for laboratory analysis. Data on crops/cropping pattern, inundation depth and duration , fertilizer/irrigation applied from each checking point by interviewing farmers. Map is correlated after field survey accommodating changed features.Physical and chemical data is processed and final report is being made.
