Manufacture of Cement Bonded Particle Board (cbpb) Using Wood and Bamboo Wastage.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cement bonded particle board (CBPB), is an eco-friendly housing material. The main raw materials of cement bonded particle boards (CBPB) are wood chips and Portland cement, an inorganic binder.In the present study cement bonded particle board (CBPB) were manufactured using wastage of rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis). To increase the bending strength. A frame made of bamboo baijya bansh (Bambusa vulgaris) strips was used in the middle portion of the board bending strength, internal bond strength, thickness swelling and water absorption of the board were determined. The values of internal bond strength meet the British standards specification for cement bonded particle board (BS 3669). To investigate the durability of the board as housing materials, a demonstration house was built using CBPB at BFRI campus in 2009.

Objectives:

a) To investigate the suitability of Rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) and baijya bansh (Bambusa vulgaris) for manufacturing composite products using cement as an inorganic binder.

b) To observe the performance of the product for use as construction materials.

Methodology:

Raw materials: The raw materials for making cement bonded particleboard are mainly wood/bamboo particles (wood/bamboo chips, shavings, sawdust), Portland cement, calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and water. Preparation chips:Waste wood/bamboos are converted to chips with hammer mill machine. The chips of 0.25 to 0.30mm long are recommended for CBPB production. The chips are 20mesh screened to remove dust. Soaking and drying of chips: The chips are submerged under water for 48 hours to remove water soluble extractives, which inhibit the setting of cement. The water should be replaced after 24 hours. The soaked wood/bamboo particles are then dried to 12-15 % moisture content. Frame is made using bamboo strips and soaked under water for 24 hours to leach water soluble particles. Amount of raw materials: Cement bonded particle Board are produced at normal board target density of 1100 kg/m³.The cement and wood/bamboo particle ratio of 70:30. The dimensions of the board are 1.27mX0.63mX 12mm. Ordinary Portland cement is used as binder. Calcium chloride (2% by weight of cement) is added into the mixture of cement and chips as an accelerator to improve cement hydration. The quantity of water used for mixing cement and wood/bamboo chips is calculated using the formula developed by Simatupang (1979). Mixing of raw materials: The quantity of cement and wood chips required to make boards are weighed out. The required quantity of calcium chloride was dissolved in the part of the measured quantity of water and then added to the wood chips and mixed thoroughly with hand. The mixture is allowed to keep for 2 minutes for the penetration of calcium chloride to the wood chips. After that, the required amount of cement is mixed with the chips gradually until all the chips are thoroughly covered with cement. The mixing time is 2-3 minutes until all the particles are thoroughly coated with cement. Mat forming and pressing: Bamboo mat frame is kept in side the board, so that it is placed in the middle position of the materials. The boards are pressed under hydraulic cold press and pressed at specific pressure 140 psi for 24 hours. Curing and conditioned: After 24 hours the panels are removed from the press and mould (cauls) and kept vertically for three-four week for final curing. Trimming and storing: The boards are trimmed to the desired size using carbide tripped circular saw, and then staked horizontally in on adequately shaded area. Limitation of CBPB: Limitation of CBPB development is the compatibility of the wood materials. Some wood species produce excellent panels from other species fall upon simple handling. The extremely long curing time of cement binder is an economic disadvantage of CBPB.

Achievement/Findings:

Cement bonded particle board (CBPB) will be very useful in housing constructing materials. It is virtually incombustible and can be readily machined with normal tools and suitable for exterior applications. The combination of wood /bamboo chips and Portland cement produces a board, which is environmentally friendly.
