Integrated Nutrient Management for Sustaining Soil Fertility and Yield of Cowpea-t. Aus-t. Aman Rice Cropping Pattern in Chittagong Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong during the rabi season of 20 13-14 for sustaining soil fertility and yield of cowpea in a Cowpea- T. Aus- T. Aman rice cropping pattern by integrated nutrient management for Chittagong region. There were eight treatments, among them treatment T₅ (50-50-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1) give the highest plant height (36.91 cm), grain (2.14 t/ha) and straw (4.28 t/ha) yield and lowest was found in T₈ treatment (Native soil fertility). Application of N, P, K, S, Zn @ 50, 50, 35, 10, 5 kg/ha increase yield of cowpea.

Objectives:

To investigate the nutrient management for sustaining soil fertility and yield of cowpea-T. aus-T. aman rice cropping pattern in Chittagong region

Methodology:

The field experiment was carried out at research field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Hathazari, Chittagong during the Rabi season of 2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with three replications. There were 8 treatments and the unit plot size was 4m X 6m. Treatments were T₁ = 50-25-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₂ = 50-25-35-10-0 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₃= 50-25-35-0-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₄= 50-0-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₅ = 50-50-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₆ = 50-25-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 , T₇ = 50-25-35-10-5 kg, N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1+ CD 5 t/ha^-1, T₈= Native fertility. Besides, a blanket dose of 22 kg P, 42 kg K, 20 kg S, 5 kg Zn and 10 ton Cowdung per hectare were applied at the time of final land preparation. The whole amount of P, K, S, Zn and Cowdung were applied at the time of final land preparation. The seeds of cowpea were sown in line having a spacing of 30cm X 10 cm on last week of December 2013. General irrigation and intercultural operations and insect and pest management were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested during the first week of April. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot for recording data on plant height and 1000 seed weight. Plot yield was also recorded after final harvesting. All the collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using MST AT-C programme and LSD test was used for mean comparison. The compiled data were adjusted with the least significance difference at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicate that application of N, P, K, S, and Zn @ 50, SO, 3S, 10, 5 kg/ha increased the grain and straw yield of cowpea. This is a cropping pattern experiment and cowpea was the first crop of the cropping pattern in Chittagong region. This is the first year of the experiment. The experiment may be continued to confirm the results.
