Inheritance of culm length was  studied in seven crosses of  wheat using parents. F1,  F2, B1 and  B2 progenies. Mean values of segregating generations were within their respective parental ranges. Theoretical means of F1s  were  found to deviate significantly in three out  of seven crosses. Both additive and non-additive gene action were  detected in almost all the crosses. This study Indicated the Involvement of at least one gene  or gene  group to control this character and partial dominance of genes governing tallness. Frequency distribution of F2 culm length of all the crosses Involving FM-32 did not fit the normal curves. While, crosses with FM-139 almost approached to normality both  broad and narrow sense heritability were high in all the crosses.

To study the mode of inheritance of culm length in crosses involving four Bangladeshi varieties and two grass dwarf selected lines of wheat.

The materials used in  the  present study were  four Bangladeshi varieties namely, Akbar, Ananda. Aghrani and Kanchan and two grass dwarf lines of wheat viz,  FM-32  and  FM-139. Bangladeshi varieties were collected  from  the Regional Agriculture Research Station, Ishurdl, Bangladesh. Grass dwarf lines were procured from  the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences University of Newcastle Upon Tyne.  United Kingdom. F1,  F2,  B1 and  B2  progenies of the  crosses between Bangladeshi varieties and  grass dwarf selected lines  were also  used in this experiment. The plants were  grown in  the experimental field of Rajshahl University, during 1990-91 following  Randomized Complete Block  Design (RCB) with  three replications and providing 30 cm space between rows and 10  cm  between plants. The  P1, P2 and   F1 had  a single row each, B1 and B2s had  two rows, but three rows  for each of F2 population. Mature culm lengths were  measured in cm  from  the crown to  the  base of the tallest culm of  each plant. Observed and theoretical frequency distribution  for culm length were  calculated and tested for  normality according to Pearson's x2 test  described. The type of gene  action involved in  the inheritance of  plant height and theoretical means corresponding to additive and  non  additive gene action were  computed. The differences between observed and  theoretical means (arithmetic and geometric) were  tested by 't' and  'd'  test. The minimum number of genes controlling the expression of  culm length was calculated. Both broad and narrow sense heritability was  estimated and  the  average degree of dominance was determined by dominance ratio  method.

The results obtained in the present study also agreed  with the results reported earlier. For culm length of F2 plants from wheat crosses of normal x semi dwarf cultivars, abnormal frequency distributions and  high heritability percentages. From F2 frequency distributions of the  crosses involving Larker and the dwarf or semidwarf  parents of barley, Indicated that the major genes for plant  height were acting  in a recessive manner. The frequency  distribution of the  progenies for culm  length  in present study gave an indication of the genetic  variability  in parents of different crosses. The observed frequency distribution pattern of F2 population deviated significantly from the theoretical distribution. The highly significant  deviation  was obtained in Kan x FM-32, x2  = 53.78). All the  above significantly deviated  frequency distribution failed to correspond to normal distributions. Nature of the F2 distributions also clearly showed  apparent dissimilarities with normality and did not fit a normal curve.
