Effect of Azolla and Urea on Br11 Rice Under Sub- Tropical Conditions in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two separate studies were conducted to test the effect of Azolla pinnate R. Brown and urea on the growth and yield of BRll under flooded conditions. Both the studies showed that the application of 150 Kg N ha^-1 as Azolla and urea produced statistically similar positive effects on the grain and strew yields and differed significantly from the effect of applying 76 Kg N ha^-1 as urea. The application of 75 Kg and 160 Kg N ha^-las urea and 150 Kg N ha^-1 as Azolla increased the total yield (grain +straw) of BRll rice by 28,47 and 50% respectively over the control under field conditions compared with 27.61 and 72% increases under greenhouse conditions. The total N uptake (grain+straw) was increased by 61,78 and 76% over the control under field conditions compared with 45, 76 and 61% increases respectively under greenhouse conditions. The field study showed 30% uptake of Azolla- N by the rice plant. whereas 43% uptake was found In the greenhouse study.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of Azolla pinnata R. Brown (local strain) on a high-yielding rice variety BR11 under both greenhouse and field conditions.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted during the wet summer in a silty clay soil of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka. The soil belongs to Chhiata series of Grey Terrace type and it had the following initial characteristics: pH 6.8. organic-C 0.78%. total N 0.08%. available P (Olsen P) 14 µg 9 -1 and exchangeable K 0.27 meq 100 g-1. The same soil was used in the pot experiment. Both pot and field experiments were conducted for the above mentioned studies. Intercultural operations. Furaden 3G was used twice at the rate of 10 Kg ha^-1 to protect the rice plants from insect attack. Both pot and field plots were kept weed free by hand. N determination: The total N content of grain and straw was determined by the microkjeldahl digestion and distillation method. The following formula was used to calculate the amount of nitrogen derived from applied Azalia and urea; % N availability= [(T-C) X 100]/W.
