Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Vegetative materials of kirpa and dhundul were were rooted and leaves were grown in the propagators. Data on the rooting success of cuttings, survival and growth of seedlings have been observed properly. More than 70% cuttings were rotted initially. But when the seedling were transferred to the poly bags the vegetative seedlings were dead ultimately always in all the species. The vegetative propagation nursery does not preferable to the mangrove species. So, the trial experiment were avoided.

Objectives:

To develop vegetative propagation techniques of kirpa, jhana, sada baen and dhundul.

Methodology:

A vegetative propagation unit was established during 1997 to 2000 at MSD headquarter, Khulna and Bogi Research Station with pucca floor and drainage facilities. Nursery area including the propagation unit was protected by fence. Previously selected mother trees of kirpa and dhundul were maintained properly by painting, numbering, clearing etc. Four vegetative chambers were constructed at Khulna and four vegetative chambers were placed at Bogi. Vegetative materials of kirpa and dhundul were collected from the selected mother trees and set in the propagator with hormone (IAA) and without hormone treatment.Vegetative materials of kirpa and dhundul were collected from the Sundarbans and placed in the propagators for rooting. Data on the rooting success of cuttings, survival and growth of seedlings have been observed.

Achievement/Findings:

The vegetative propagation nursery does not preferable to the mangrove species.The study does not show any better performance in the field. So the study was not continued further as the seeds are available and more suitable to survive in the Sundarbans than that of vegetative seedlings.
