Root Development, Nutrient Uptake and Yield Performance of Soybean as Influenced by Phosphorus Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Root development, dry mater production, nutrient uptake and yield in different levels of P fertilized soybean (Glycine max L.) plants were compared with those of without P fertilized plants grown in pot condition during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. Variety G-2 recorded higher values of root volume as well as root dry mass, leaf area, dry mater production, nutrient uptake and yield components, which ultimately helped in promoting greater seed yield planf'. Application of 60 kg P₂0₅ha^-1' promoted the highest plant growth, nutrient uptake and seed yield of soybean varieties significantly via better root development and it was not significantly different from 90 kg P₂0₅ ha^-1Higher doses of P decreased the root development, dry matter production and yield. Uptake of N, P and S by soybean plant was strongly associated with seed yield. Response of seed yield plant to added P fertilizer was quadratic. However, optimum levels of P for root development, plant growth, nutrient uptake and yield of PB-1 and G-2 was 76 kg P₂0₅ha^-1.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of P fertilizer on root development, leaf area and dry matter production at different growth stages, nutrient uptake and yield of soybean varieties

Methodology:

A pot culture experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur under a semi controlled environment during the rabi seasons of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. The soil was silty loam with pH value 6.3, organic matter content 0.98%, total nitrogen 0.09%, available phosphorus 0.07%, exchangeable potassium 0.11 meq/1OOg soil and available sulphur 8.20 ppm, respectively. Total rainfall during the crop growing season was 227 mm in 1999-2000 and 258 mm in 2000-2001. The mean maximum and minimum air temperatures from sowing to maturity were 30.8 and 15.1°C in 1999-2000; 29.4 and 14.7°C in 2000-2001, respectively. Two varieties of soybean Sohag (PB-1) and Bangladesh Soybean-4 (G-2) and five levels of phosphorus (0, '30, 60, 90 and 120 P 0 kg ha.1) constituted the experimental treatments in both the years. The pots were arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated fifteen times. Earthen pots of 20 em diameter and 30 em height were used to raise plants, each containing 12 kg of soils. Fertilizers 20 kg N, 40 kg K20 and 30 kg S ha^-1in the form of urea, muriate of potash and gypsum were mixed thoroughly with the soil before filling the pots. The source of P fertilizer was triple super phosphate and mixed with the soils before filling the pots. In addition, cowdung was added to the soil @ 5 t ha^-1 . In each pot, four seeds of soybean varieties were planted in December 30, 1999 and December 21, 2000, respectively. At three leaf stage of crop, the plants were thinned out keeping one healthy seedling in each pot.

Achievement/Findings:

Two years study revealed that optimum level of phosphorus was 76 kg P 0 ha^-1for 1 both the varieties in presence of 20 kg N, 40 kg K₂0 and 30 kg S ha^-1 for getting higher root mass, dry matter production, nutrient uptake and yield components that resulted in greater seed yield. However, Bangladesh Soybean-4 (-G2) was superior to that of Sohag (PB-1).
