Validation of Zero Tillage Surfaces Seeding Establishment Method of Boro Rice in Low Land Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur during 2003-2004. Objectives of this study was to increase farmers' net income and validate and transfer this technology to the farmers. The study indicates that the Zero-tillage surfaces seeding with sprouted seeds produced grain yield of 7.87 t/ha, which was comparable to TP rice. Gross margin obtained with zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS) was higher because of not increasing any cost for ZTSS.

Objectives:

To increase farmers' net income
To validate and transfer this technology to the farmers.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur during 2003-2004. The experiment consisted of two methods of establishments, transplanting (TP) and zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS). In ZTSS methods, sprouted seeds of BRRI dhan29 were sown in line on to the wet soil without any tillage just after recession of floodwater. In both methods of planting, all amounts of P, K, S and Zn were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits at 15, 45 and 55 days after transplanting in TP method while this was at 20, 40, 45 and 80 days after sowing in ZTSS. As a herbicide, Ronstar was applied in ZTSS just 6 days after sowing. Other management practices followed for the experiment were as per recommendation.

Achievement/Findings:

Zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS) method gave an average yield of 7.87 t/ha, which was almost similar to that of TP method. Crop under ZTSS method matured about 9 days earlier than TP method. Agro-economic analysis shows higher gross margin in ZTSS compared to TP method. The probable reason to have higher gross margin in ZTSS is due to less cost involvement in crop establishment method. Because of lower cost of production and higher gross margin, ZTSS method may be an alternative option for Boro rice in lowland ecosystem.
