Studies on the Dielectric Constant of Jute Fibre by Impedance Analyzer.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dielectric constants of jute fibre (Corchorus capsularis L.) have been measured by an impedance analyzer from low power frequency 950Hz) to radio range frequency (1 MHz). The values of the dielectric constant have been found to vary from 6.68 (at 1MHz) to 10.30 (at 50Hz). The values of the dielectric constant decrease with the increase of the frequencies and vice versa. As the dielectric constant is the ratio of flux density to the electric field hence the values of dielectric constant decrease with increases in the high frequencies electric field.

Objectives:

To study the di-electric properties of the jute fiber

Methodology:

Middle section of jute fibres were cut into small pieces of sizes of about 0.5-1.0 inch. Then these pieces of jute fibres were fed into a grinding machine in order to convert the fibres into very small pieces. The powder formed samples were sucked/filtered by a very fine and thin net to make the powder very fine. The powder formed samples were then put in a specially prepared high-pressure die. Then a high pressure (14000 pis) was applied by a hydraulic press to make it compact and to remove air gap, voids or cavity or minimize moisture content of jute fibres. In this way sample of thickness 1mm was prepared in the form of tablet. The tablet was heated by burner to remove the moisture content in the tablet. Then, dried tablet was kept in a Desiccator in order to prevent moisture. The tablet was kept between the two electrodes, which were inserted in a hole of a highly insulating material in order to avoid stray capacitances and unwanted noises from outside of the experimental set up. The three dimensional size of the Ebonite sheet were. After inserting the sample in between the two electrodes, the movable side was pushed towards the sample so that the sample has contact with the two electrodes as well as no air gap remains between the electrodes and tablet. The movable screw was then fixed up so that the surfaces of two electrodes had good contact with the tablet. The whole system was kept in a metallic box and the terminals of the two electrodes were connected through a loss free wire into the jack of an Impedance Analyzer. Data were collected from the Impedance analyzer directly. In this way at various frequencies (50 Hz to 5MHz) the values of capacitance were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

In this work the values of dielectric of jute fibre (BWB) have been measured over the frequency range of 50 Hz – 1MHz. The values of dielectric constant have been found to vary from 6.68 to 10.30 it is seen that the values of dielectric constant decrease with the frequency. It is worthwhile to mention here that most of the perfectly dried fibres have a dielectric constant between 3 and 11. It may be mentioned here that, dielectric constant for cotton vary from 4.4 to 8.3, for from 4.4 to 7.3, for silk 3 to 6 for wool 3 to 5.5 (8 and 9).
