Prevalence of Different Types of Foot and Mouth Disease Virus in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Epithelial samples from suspetecd cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FM D) from 13 districts of Bangladesh during June 1988 to May 1989. The samples were later tested by Micro-Complement fixation test (CFT). Four types of FMD virus were detected and these were 0, C. Asia-I and A₂₂ (Subtype). Type-O was fouod in samples from. Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalrnonirhat and Com ilia ; Type-C in Bagerhat Asia-1 in Brahmonbarla, Sirajgonj , Pabna , Borgur a and Toogi (Dhaka) : A₂₂ in Comilla, Khulna and Cox's bazar. Out of total 141 samples tested. type-O was positive in 41 samples (29.1%), type-C in 5 samples (3.5 %). Asia -1 in 45 samples (31.9 %) and A ₂₂ (Sub- type) in 12 samples (85%) and the rest 38 (27.0%) sample. showd either negative or anticomplementary activity. A₂₂ (Subtype) was identified for first time in Bangladesh and Type C was identified further after a long absence from 1976.

Objectives:

To know the prevalence of different types and subtypes of FMD virus in different districts of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The survey work was conducted from June, 1988 to May, 1989 in 13 districts of Bangladesh. The epithelial samples of mainly tongue, gum, cheeks and interdigital spaces in suspected cases of FMD were collected. Samples were ground with the help of pestle and morter and 10% suspension was prepared in phosphate buffer saline (PBS), P^H 7.6. After centrifugation at 3500 rpm for 10 minutes the supernatant fluid was collected as an antigen. Antisera against type O₁, C₁, Asia-1, A5 and A₂₂ were used and these were imported from Animal virus Research Institute, Pirbright, UK. The Micro-Complement fixation test (CFT) was employed for typing of the virus.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that out of all. type-O and Asia-1 were more prevalent; A₂₂ was less prevalent and tvpe-C had only sporadic prevalence. The variation in the rate of prevalence of different types of FMD virus might be due to (i) different size of the samples tested from diffe- rent places (ii) different quality of the samples containing high/low/very low level of specific type of virus, (iii) different epidemiological characte ristics of each type of virus.
