Study on the Use of Promising Fungal Culture for the Up-gradation of Low Quality Jute and Allied Fibres

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A huge quantity of low grade and barky jute fibres are being produced every year in Bangladesh having 25-40% cuttings at the basal parts. Before processing in the mill and also before exporting, these unwanted cuttings are always cut away from the whole fibre. Because these portions have no desired and effective use in the mill and as such cuttings have no economic value. So, the farmers never get proper price of their produce. We know that previously isolated some fungus have the promising effect in softening jute cuttings and there might be the possibility of up-grading the fibre quality through softening the jute cuttings by using the promising fungal culture. The experiment was undertaken for the up-gradation of low-grade jute fiber having cuttings at the basal parts through using promising fungal cultures and was conducted in the period of 2000. After 3-4 days the fungus started spreading on the low grade fibres. It appeared from the experimental result that the treated low grade barky jute fibres were up-graded to C-grade within 10 days of retting with Sporotrichum sp., while there was no development in the control sample.

Objectives:

To up-grade the low-grade jute fiber having cuttings at the basal parts through using promising fungal cultures

Methodology:

Previously isolated fungi eg. Sporotrichum sp. was sub-cultured in the liquid media for growth. After sufficient growth, it was separated from the liquid broth and was mixed with kaolin powder. The mixture was then mixed with water and made into solution. The solution was then applied or sprinkled in 2 kg of low grade barky jute fibres and was covered with moist hessian. A control was simultaneously run using water only instead of fungal culture. Finally the results were observed.

Achievement/Findings:

It appeared from the experimental result that the treated low grade barky jute fibres were up-graded to C-grade within 10 days of retting with Sporotrichum sp., while there was no development in the control (retting time 26 days) sample where fiber grade was E.
