Study the Tensile and Visco-elestic Properties of Mesta and Kenaf and Compare Them with Tossa Jute (1985).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For this study Mesta S-24, and Kenaf C-2 were collected from agriculture Research Wing. The various characteristic properties of these samples were determined. From the result of bundle strength, breaking extension, tenacity, textile modulus and finally quality ratio mean that the spinning quality of Mesta S-24 and those of all the Kenaf varieties are lower compared to that of Tossa jute fibers. The obtained results revealed that Mesta and Kenaf can not be spun along to obtained yarns for industrial applications, but they can be spun only as a combination with other fibers for industrial value.

Objectives:

To study on the quality assessment and physic o-mechanical behavior of Mesta and Kenaf and allied fibers.

Methodology:

For this study Mesta S-24, and Kenaf C-2 were collected from agriculture Research Wing of this institute. Then for sampling one maund of Mesta S-24 was spread out on the floor. There was of 76 heads (hata) of fiber, each head weighting slightly above one pound. Then 22 heads of fiber were collected by using random number table for sampling. The remaining 54 heads of fiber spread out was used by the Experimental spinning Mills of TRW to spin it into 8 lbs and 10 lbs/spindle count of yarns. From the quality consisting of 22 heads various samples, for determinding different physico-mechanical characteristics of the Mesta were taken. Similarly, for preparing various samples for test 22 heads of kenaf C-2 were separated from a maund of kenaf C-2 fibre, the remaining bigger portion being used for spinning it into 8 lbs and 10 lbs/spindle count of yarns. Bundle strength for Mesta S-24, and Kenaf C-2 were separately determined by Pressley fiber bundle strength tester using zero gauge. Fineness was obtained in terms of fibre diameter expressed in microns. Linear density in tex for each Mesta and kenaf was determined by weighting 12 cms. Length of filament in mg and expressing them as the weight of 1000 meter in gms. Counts and TPI of yarns, tensile strength of yarns were determined with the help of apparatus for this purpose.

Achievement/Findings:

Tensile strength, Fineness, Breaking Tenacity, Breaking elongation percentage, and work of rupture determined for Mesta S-24, and Kenaf C-2 were measured. The various characteristic properties of Mesta S-24 and Kenaf C-2 which were the uncut fibers obtained from agriculture Research Wing. The visco-elastic effect in Mesta and Kenaf was almost nil as the case with Tossa jute and white jute fibers. The average bundle strength and breaking Tenacity values for Mesta-24 are 10.87 lbs/mg and 23.81 gmwt/tex respectively. These values for Tossa jute are 11.17 lbs/mg and 27.5 mgwt/tex respectively. Thus Mesta-24 is particularly too low in tenacity value. But these figures for kenaf were 11.71 lbs/mg and 27.48 gmwt/tex respectively which indicate that kenaf C-2 was as good as Tossa jute fibres with respect to strength characteristics. From the result of breaking extension, Textile modulus and finally quality ratio mean that the spinning quality of Mesta S-24 and those of all the Kenaf varieties are lower compared to that of Tossa jute fibers. This low spinning quality of Mesta and Kenaf are mainly due to their bigger diameter compared to Tossa jute fibers. The average linear density for Tossa jute round about 2.5 tex and diameter (width) was generally below 42 microns. Lower quality ratio of Mesta S-24 was quite justifiable because its strength was lower but diameter was greater compared to other species.
