Development of Textile Auxiliaries from Locally Available Raw Material

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 1995 at Chemical Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka to develop textile auxiliaries. A small amount of waste jute seed was crushed finally and oil was extracted there from by treating with petroleum spirit. After extraction of oil, the petroleum spirit was recovered by distillation which may be used to extract oil from another batch. The solvent-free oil was treated with caustic alkali's and processed accordingly to make textile soft soap. Two types of emulsions i.e. the emulsions prepared with JBO and water using Nonidet P40 and the emulsion prepared with JBO and water using the prepared textile soft soap from jute seed oil were compared and found almost identical. A small amount of verenda seed was crushed finally and oil was extracted by treating it with petroleum spirit. Oil content in verenda seed is about 455. Petroleum spirit was distilled and reused to minimize cost. This oil was then sulphonated and was ready to be used in processing raw jute.

Methodology:

Oil from jute seed can be extracted either by expression with the help of an expeller or by extraction with the treatment of solvents. Though the later process is expensive, yet this process has been adopted for laboratory experiments due to conveniences in many aspects. Waste jute seed was crushed finally and treated with petroleum spirit (BP 80-100 degree C). After collecting oil from jute seed, petroleum spirit was recovered by distillation to minimize cost. Jute seed oil freed from petroleum spirit was treated with sodium hydroxide 10% and potassium hydroxide 305 and boiled for 90 minutes for complete saponification. It was then conditioned by cooling at 25 degree C and processed under certain conditions. This prepared soft soap was used in the preparation of emulsions which are conventionally used in jute mills for softening raw jute. Emulsion has been made with jute batching oil and water in the proportion of 2o:80 adding 0.3% imported nonidet P 40. Similarly, emulsion has been made with JBO and water in the same proportion as above using the prepared soft soap from jute seed oil. A comparative study of emulsion prepared with Nonidet P.40 and soft soap from jute seed oil was made. It is possible to replace JBO by verenda seed oil (vegetable oil) to process raw jute. The verenda seed oil is very much viscous and so it was sulphonated at first and was applied on raw jute for processing. For making emulsion with JBO, it is essential to use Nonidet P 40.But for processing raw jute, if sulphonated verenda seed oil is used, there is no need to use any detergent or soft soap.

Achievement/Findings:

Emulsions were made with jute batching oil and water under similar proportions and identical conditions using imported Nonidet P40 and the prepared soft soap, separately. Stability of both the emulsions were compared and observed carefully. The emulsion prepared with Nonidet P40 and the prepared soft soap from jute seed oil appeared to be identical. To use verenda seed oil for processing raw jute, the verenda seed oil is to be sulphonated first.
